Is your kitchen a source of calm or a source of chaos?
Let's face it: the kitchen is often the busiest, most high-traffic room in any home. We call it "the heart of the home" for a reason—it’s where we gather, where we share meals, where homework happens, and where memories are made. But for many of us, it’s also a place of clutter, a graveyard of forgotten gadgets, and a source of daily frustration.
As a professional organizer, I'm often asked which room is my favorite to transform. My answer is almost always the same: the kitchen.
Why? Because no room offers a bigger return on your investment of time and energy. A well-organized kitchen doesn't just look good; it fundamentally changes how you live and interact within your home. It’s a room that touches everyone who lives there, and that’s a powerful thing.

Why Your Kitchen Deserves a Professional Organization Makeover
I’m passionate about kitchen organization not just because I love creating tidy spaces, but because of the incredible impact it has on my clients' lives. Here are a few of the reasons why the kitchen is so incredibly helpful to have organization:
It’s the Hub of Family Action: If you live with other people, this is the one spot where everyone is touching everything. A logic-driven home organization system in the kitchen means everyone knows where things go, reducing the "honey, where's the...?" questions and making clean-up a breeze.
It Saves Your Time (and Sanity): Whether you love to cook and bake, or you view it as an evil necessity, having an organized kitchen is a game-changer. Imagine easily finding your favorite spatula, not having to dig for the matching container lid, or instantly accessing your mixing bowls. That’s more than just decluttering your space; it’s a form of daily self-care.
It Saves You Money: This is especially true when you extend your efforts to pantry organization. When you can clearly see what you have, you stop buying doubles. No more buying another bag of flour because you can't find the one you already have. You’ll reduce food waste and shop smarter.

My Own Kitchen Realization: How "Fresh Eyes" Sparked a Change
Sometimes, you can be too close to a space to see it clearly. Even as a seasoned professional organizer, I can fall into the trap of letting things be "just the way they are" for years. We’ve lived in our home for 17 years, and once a gadget finds its way into a cabinet, it becomes part of the architecture!
A recent trip gave me exactly the perspective I needed. Stepping away and returning allowed me to see our kitchen with fresh, clear eyes. A few days after I got home, my husband (the cook in our family!) said, "I’d really like more prep space by the stove."
That was the spark. I’m always happy to trade a little professional organizing time for delicious meals! My goal was simple: make our kitchen work for us, not against us.
The 4-Step Professional Organizer’s Process in Action
I used my own signature 4-step process to tackle this transformation, and you can use it, too! Here's how it unfolded in my home:

Step 1. Set Your Goal: This is the critical first step in any successful home organization project. Our goals were very specific:
Create more valuable prep space on the counter next to the stove.
Find a dedicated, functional home for my current obsession: sourdough bread-making supplies!
Step 2. Categorize: Even though things were already categorized, I knew I had to go all-in. I pulled everything out of the problem areas. This wasn’t just about moving things; it was about reassessing their "real estate" in our prime locations. Just because a serving plate was next to the dishwasher for ten years didn't mean it still earned that spot.

Step 3. Edit: This is where the magic (and the tough decisions!) happens. You must edit your belongings without mercy. Even I was surprised by what I found:
A crockpot with no heating base (How did that even happen?!).
Serving plates that were gathering dust for over a decade.
A griddle that hadn't seen the light of day in at least three years.
It was time to let go. These unused items were hogging space that could be used for the things we actually use and love.
4. Organize + Contain: Now for the fun part: putting it all back together in a system that makes sense for our lives. Here’s what we did:

We created a dedicated coffee and espresso station on a smaller side counter with mugs conveniently stored above. This freed up massive counter space near the main prep area.
We moved all the "heavy hitters"—the big appliances—into the island, where they are easily accessible but off the counters.
Finally, my sourdough gear got its very own "bread-making station" in a cabinet! No more hunting for my starter, scraper, or proofing baskets.
Shop My Kitchen Must-Haves
I’m often asked what specific products I use to keep my own kitchen (and my clients'!) humming along. Here are the "heavy hitters" currently in my cabinets:
Drawer Dividers: These are the secret to keeping that "everything" drawer from becoming a "junk" drawer.
Airtight Food Containers: Essential for the pantry (and keeping that sourdough flour fresh!).
Turntables (Lazy Susans): My favorite way to make deep corner cabinets or high shelves functional.
The Sourdough Kit: If you’re ready to join the bread-making obsession, this is the exact kit I used for my "bread station."
The Result: A Kitchen We Love Again

This re-organization didn't require a renovation, new cabinets, or a large budget. It just required a little bit of professional organizing time, a willing spirit (and appetite for my husband's cooking!), and a clear, 4-step plan.
Our kitchen is now a space that supports our hobbies, makes cooking a joy, and feels like the true, functional heart of our home.
